Stephen Fry has been the host of the Bafta film awards for 12 years

The comedian and presenter, who first fronted the ceremony in 2001, is passing on the baton as he feels it is time to let someone else have a go

“Every one of the ceremonies that I had the privilege of hosting has a place in my memory.

“The mixture of glamour, glory, drama and – occasionally – embarrassment and hiccup holds a unique place in the British film calendar,” says the 60-year-old – perhaps referring to 2016’s ceremony when he joked that Bafta-winning costume designer Jenny Beavan looked like a “bag lady”.

Despite the quip being good-natured he was forced to quit Twitter temporarily after being inundated with criticism.

Stephen, who took a break from hosting duties from 2007 to 2011 with Jonathan Ross filling in, adds: “After so long a time I felt it only right to stand down and let others take the Baftas on to new heights and greater glories.

“What fun it will be to watch Bafta 2018 without my heart hammering, mouth drying and knees trembling.”

Bafta’s chief executive Amanda Berry said: “On behalf of everyone at Bafta, I would like to sincerely thank Stephen Fry for making each and every one of the film awards that he’s presented such memorable and joyous occasions.

“We will miss him tremendously.”

His replacement for the ceremony which takes place on February 18 will be announced on Tuesday when this year’s nominees are revealed.

BEING a movie star certainly has plenty of perks but comes with a hefty price tag too.

Margot Robbie starred in 2016’s superhero blockbuster ‘Suicide Squad’

The hidden downsides of fame are something Margot Robbie discovered since starring in 2016’s superhero blockbuster Suicide Squad.

Now a hugely successful A-lister the former Home And Away actress bemoans having to fork out a fortune for a security team to keep tabs on her.

“There’s just all this stuff you learn along the way like when you get death threats.

“It’s smart to have a security team do a background check to see if there is any past history of violence because you need to know whether you need security to go to certain events,” says the 27-year-old who is up for a best actress at tomorrow’s Golden Globes: “Every time you do a background check it costs $2,000!

“I just wish someone had explained these things to me early on.

“I would’ve known what I was getting myself into.’’

CHRISTIAN BALE is no stranger to yo-yo dieting for the sake of his film roles and has admitted that pushing his body to extremes has become an “obsession”.

Christian Bale has admitted that pushing his body to extremes has become an ‘obsession’

From starving himself to play an emaciated insomniac in 2004’s The Machinist, to piling on the pounds for his latest role in the Dick Cheney biopic Backseat, the 43-year-old puts his body through the mill to give his authentic performances.

“I keep thinking I’m invincible,” he said.

“I like obsession, I hope it stays as a healthy obsession.

“There’s just always been an image that struck me: Jimi Hendrix playing guitar, eyes closed, looking like he’s in ecstasy.

“He completely ignores the pain because of the ecstasy.

“I enjoy that level of obsession.”

THINGS could get awkward at tomorrow’s Golden Globes as two of Hollywood’s most famous love rivals come face to face.

Angelina Jolie and Jennifer AnistonGETTY

Both Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston are set to present awards at the Golden Globes ceremony

Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie are both set to present awards at the ceremony, despite usually giving each other a wide berth.

The last time they were seen at the same event was in 2015 and Jennifer, 48, famously labelled 42-year-old Angelina “uncool” in a 2008 interview in US Vogue.

Jennifer’s ex-husband Brad Pitt, 54, famously met Angelina on the set of their 2005 film Mr & Mrs Smith and there have been multiple claims since that their romance began while he was still married to Jen.

But in an apparent nod to female solidarity the pair will have to patch up their differences when they meet at the Globes.

Ange filed for divorce from Brad in 2016 and Jen is now married to actor Justin Theroux, 46.

Perhaps the fact that Brad’s now a mutual ex might give them some common ground?
